Supporters of Hope Station’s ministry in Wilson celebrated Friday the opening of the nonprofit organization’s new facility, which they hope will enable it to better serve those in need.
Hope Station board members, public officials and one of the nonprofit’s founders met at the new 6,000-square-foot shelter for a ground breaking ceremony Friday afternoon. The facility includes a homeless shelter, food pantry and clothing closet for people living in the Wilson area.

Greensboro, NC — A special apartment complex for a special group of people is about to be built in Winston-Salem.
The Hunters Hills Apartments will house people with mental and physical disabilities. The community will consist of an apartment building, a community building, and community garden.

The legislature isn’t going to make a deadline to get a final budget for state government approved by early next week.
The House Appropriations Committee agreed Thursday to a temporary spending measure that directs how government agencies keep operating after the new fiscal year begins Wednesday.

The Wilson Medical Center’s psychiatric ward, New Beginnings, will stay closed for at least another year while hospital officials try to improve their bottom line.
Rick Hudson, chief executive officer of the medical center, said it would not be fiscally responsible for the hospital to open the ward at this time.

As a conference committee of House and Senate members tries to hammer out a balanced budget for next year, two area lawmakersagree the spending plan will require some form of tax hikes as well as deep program cuts.
State Rep. Bill Owens, D-Pasquotank, said he expects both deeper cuts and some kind of tax hike before the budget is finished. The seven-term lawmaker said it was by far the toughest budget year he has ever seen.
“We had well over $4 billion worth of cuts to start with,” Owens said. Even using about $1.5 billion in federal stimulus money, the state still faces a $3 billion shortfall, he said.

RALEIGH, N.C. A House panel has rejected a bill that would have given a $6,000 annual tax credit to North Carolina parents who put their special-needs children in private school.
The House Education Committee voted 26-21 on Tuesday against approving the measure.

A day of fun was filled with political undertones as mental health care providers and consumers gathered for a cookout hosted by the Lenoir County Mental Health Association
State budget cuts occupied the minds of those in attendance as hot dogs, chips and sodas were served to the crowd at Barnet Park on Wednesday afternoon.
